January 2011 Featured Artist: Jack Dickerson

Jack translates seemingly minor everyday occurrences into striking moments in time. Jack paints what he feels, in his own way, starting with a general idea and developing a “feeling” about a place or person that gradually evolves. With his impressionist style that distilles images down to only the bare necessities, Jack captures the moment vividly, leaving you feeling very alive.

"I paint from the inside out. Over time my memory has stored snapshots of all kinds of events, impressions, reactions, emotions, experiences and insights. Certain visuals I see in the present, every day, create a powerful connection with those snapshots from the past. It is mostly from these connections that new images and emotions emerge for my canvases. As my life unfolds, so do my paintings. My large bodies of work reveal my energy, challenges, feelings, beliefs, and sense of purpose—my personal stories.

Dickerson’s work has been recognized with several awards, and has been published in numerous magazines and catalogs. He shows regularly in the Northeast, and has paintings hanging in individual and corporate collections in 19 states. He was the recipient of a 2 ½ year grant from the Ford Foundation.

Jack is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (Basel College of Art) in Basel, Switzerland, and has studied with American Photographer Harry Callahan, Swiss artists Armin Hoffman, Kurt Hauert and Peter Von Arx, Joseph Albers’ associate Sewell Sillman, and Amercian artist/illustrator Fred Freeman. He lives with his tromp l'oeil artist wife on Cape Cod.
