hosted Fall and Winter 2011 by ArcLight Cinemas Beach Cities.

EL SEGUNDO, CA -- Movie lovers visiting the popular ArcLight Cinemas

array of vibrant paintings by Los Angeles avant-garde artist Ione
Citrin.

powerfully evocative "UFO" from her Circle Paintings series, will be

Eliza Schmid
Place: Global Arte Bella Gallery, Don Gaspar& E. Alameda.
Artist: Eliza M. Schmid
Theme of show: "Embroidered Nature" (collaged embroidery and oil on canvas)
Time of show: August 26- Sept. 18, 2011
Reception: Friday, August 26, 5-7pm
Contact: Eliza at 474-5846

These embroidered pieces have a long and interesting history.
. . .My grandmother had a shoestore in the 9th district where she had many Jewish costumers. She befriended some of them and being a real Catholic she tried to help many. One of these ladies gave her a box of embroidered tablecloths and handkerchiefs, no jewelry or money, because most of these Jewish families were not rich. After my grandmother's death my mother took most of these little treasures, and after my mother's death in 1983, I took as many as I could find with me to America. I probably missed a lot and only God knows where the rest are. However, I have been using some of the tablecloths always thinking of the woman who embroidered them and then died in the gas chambers. I want this show to be a bit of a memorial to this unknown woman

Q. Is it cheaper for you to paint on reclaimed materials?
Not really. It all depends on the material and where we are getting them from. I've just purchased some metal street signs and Pepsi signs from Texas and paid quite a bit more than I would have for a canvas. One the other hand, I got lucky with a recent washing machine lid. It was found in a friend's attic, sitting there for years just waiting for me to paint on it apparently. Also, a wonderful man who came to my booth at a festival worked for a cabinet door manufacturer. He donated several cabinet doors, saying they usually throw them out. I love it when I get to keep something out of a landfill, it makes my heart sing. Right now, we are hunting for reclaimed tin roof. We had to purchase the last bit that was torn down from a building in Escondido, CA. If you know anyone who has some laying around please think of me : )

Rockwater Art Center Work Shops
Rockwater Art Center, a beautiful private art workshop facility and gallery in our turn of the century farmhouse on a landscaped acre with four water features. Director, Derek Gundy (who is also Manager of our sponsor, Artist Edge art supply stores) and Carrie Goller have scheduled workshops with some amazing artists - Juliette Aristides, Jim Lamb, Ned Mueller, Michele Usibelli and Max Grover are just a few. Rockwater Art Center encourage signing up now as these workshops are quite small (usually 8 - 15 students, depending upon the instructor) and will fill up fast. This kind of intimate setting is very rare, especially for sought-after teachers such as Juliette Artistides who has a very full schedule. For example, Juliette has her own Atelier at Gage Academy, teaches in Italy, just taught 120 students over 3 days in Oklahoma, is currently the subject of a documentary on drawing, is finishing another book and just addressed an entire university. I had the good fortune of taking this young classical realism master's workshop a few years ago; we are so fortunate to be able to host her at Rockwater.
