Biography
Lisa Bartell was born in Albany, New York and moved extensively throughout the US as well as overseas. Bartell knew she wanted to be an artist since childhood, as drawing, combined with a vivid imagination, was always a safe haven.
The process of healing on all levels inspires the artist's oil paintings: psychically, emotionally, and physically. Bartell views the creativity of nature, in all cycles, as the ultimate healing power emotionally and psychically. Her own healing process, which disrupted her art career for over a decade, has given Bartell a strong psychological understanding of healing, which translates to a unique visual expression.
Bartell began her art career as an illustrator and designer. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Memphis. Bartell studied drawing and painting at Temple University's Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA.
Since 2002, Bartell has strictly focused on oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in North Carolina, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and New York, as well as on-line exhibits. Bartell's paintings are in numerous private collections in the US.
The artist has been awarded the Artist Showcase Award for “The Healing Power of Art and the Award of Excellence for “Herstory”. Both are Manhattan Arts on-line exhibits curated by Renee Phillips of the International Association of Art Critics.
Bartell currently resides in North Carolina.

Artist Statement
I experience a connection with life through creativity. The ultimate expression of the creative spirit lies in the unlimited details of the natural world. Drawing and painting these details gives me the opportunity to intertwine personal creativity with the spirit of nature's creativity. During this artistic process I discover an internal place of healing and a grounded appreciation of life “in the moment”. This experience makes possible a connection with creation on a grander scale.
I describe the style of my work as representational expressionism. The forms, lines and patterns drawn and painted are a subjective interpretation resulting in an exaggerated and distorted version of reality. Transferring original drawings to canvas enlarges personal expression through internal use of color and brushstroke. I want the viewer to experience subjective energy in union with reality.
I find the complexity of natural forms to be symbolic of the cyclical drama of opposites that unfolds in every human life and thus bind us to the cycle of the natural world.
