What inspires my art?

By Meg Harper

Magazines. Love them. I will invariably get thru a magazine and have ripped out several pages for colors or patterns or a certain angle of a persons face, etc. I have a wall in my studio that is filled with magazines pages taped up and used as reference for inspiration. I recently found a quilt in a magazine that I am going to use the colors from for the palette in my next series of paintings.

Museums and art galleries. Love walking thru them and looking at other art. Seeing how someone else handled the light, how they do faces, what colors people use, brushstrokes, composition, etc. You can learn so much AND get inspired to create at the same time.

Nature. There is such a simple beauty and perfection to the great outdoors. Being in nature and looking closely at the details of flower petals, dew drops, rocks, leaves, etc. takes my breath away. I attempt to capture that simplistic beauty in my work.

Photography. When I am traveling or out in nature I love to take photo's and use them as springboards to start a painting.

Fabric. I love the lucious patterns in fabric, especially the kind used in upholstery. They are so luxurious.

Creative Energy. I have lots of it and when I am expressing it I am a much happier person. If I have a painting or creative project I am working on my life just seems to flow so much better.

People. My series of paintings called Fly Girls was inspired by a little girl named Hannah of the ripe old age of 10 across the street from me. She loves to draw and I used some of her drawings as the start of these paintings.

Outlook on life. I think that my postive energy helps keep me painting. I am getting better at letting the artistic flow go thru me and just keep painting vs. judging each stroke and doubting and stopping myself.
